Camera Shutter question~?

I%26#039;ve llearned about 3 different types of shutters (in a camera).

Leaf Shutter (circular -closing into the center-etc.)

Focal Plane Shutter (two curtains moving across the focal plane- directly in front of the film)

AND.. A third one that moves from top to bottom.. But I can not remember the name...

So, does any know the name of the shutter that moves from top to bottom?

Thank you in advance!

Reply:It%26#039;s still a focal plane shutter, but just one that moves horizontally rather than vertically.

Dr. Sam,

I%26#039;m pretty sure that what you%26#039;re asking about is indeed called a Copal Square shutter.

It was used on the various Konica cameras, as well as on the Canon EF, among others. At the time, it was a pretty big deal as it could sync at 1/125 when most horizontal shuttered cameras did 1/60 at their best.

The shutters used in pretty much every modern SLR these days are derivatives of the Copal square design. Many, however, are improved to sync at 1/250.

Interestingly enough, the Canon F-1N is the fastest syncing horizontal shutter I know of. It can sync at 1/90. It was also the last major camera I%26#039;m aware of to use a horizontal shutter design(using titanium foil shutter leaves).
Reply:Are you talking about a Twin Lens reflex camera?
Reply:It%26#039;s still a focal plane shutter, but just a vertical travel shutter instead of horizontal.

I KNOW there%26#039;s another name for this, as I remember when they were introduced (yes, I am really that old) and they were called SOMETHING else. I asked a very similar question here about 6-12 months ago and I didn%26#039;t get any answer other than focal plane shutter.

%26quot;Copal%26quot; is a common name for leaf shutters, by the way. It%26#039;s a brand name that is very commonly used. %26quot;Compur%26quot; is another.

There are some people here saying that is was called the %26quot;Copal Square%26quot; shutter, but I can%26#039;t substantiate that beyond their comversation.
