How much money should I ask for my illustrations?

I%26#039;m illustrating a children%26#039;s book for the first time, and I have no idea how much money to ask for.. I was thinking a certain price per page, plus a certain % of the profit.. I%26#039;ve never done this before, so I don%26#039;t know what an illustrator usually makes.

Does anyone have experience in this??

Leonardo da vinci help?
What are you doing? Why are you asking for someone else to solve this question? Can you not do this yourself? What are you studying - and why? I could give you all the answers -but why should I/we help you if you can%26#039;t be bothered to do the work yourself? Try studying!

Get ready to go round the world; you will need to be pretty well educated, in order to appreciate Europe, %26amp; have money. I have seen Leonardo%26#039;s David, but have been bothered by beggars to get to it.

OK: Try these questions;-

1) Leonardo da Vinci%26#039;s statue of David is where?

2. How many Euros to the Dollar?

3. Who said: %26quot;Refuse all invitations that require new clothes.%26quot; (A very sensible American man!)

I am going on holiday from England to France and have had to answer all these questions at one time or another.

If you can%26#039;t be bothered, then maybe you%26#039;ve wasted all your life.

Leonardo da vinci help?
You really need to read the rules of this place:

%26quot;In most cases, it%26#039;s OK to ask for homework help on Yahoo! Answers. When asking, categorize your question in the Homework Help or other appropriate category. To get the best answers, include what you understand so far and where you%26#039;re getting stuck.%26quot;

No one is going to do your homework for you. Start on it yourself, and then ask us again if you get stuck on something. If want to know how to analyze a piece of art, we can help you do that too. But no one is going to sit here and do your paper for you,
Reply:Leonardo da vinci was a very obscure artist. You%26#039;ll probably have to put in a good bit of study to find out about him. Good Luck.
Reply:At least come up with three of his works that you enjoy. It is a simple google image search. Then maybe people will be more willing to help you. You need to do some of the work or you won%26#039;t retain the information. Oh, just so you know, the David was by Michelangelo, not daVinci, oh my.

oil paint

draw it?

pastels

charcoal

im prolly gonna draw it so would it look better in pastels or characoal?
What method of drawing/painting suits this picture best?
Soft pastels! Good luck!
What method of drawing/painting suits this picture best?
Well...it depends on what you are after. If you start by doing a charcoal as a value study you will understand the the painting better before you start the actual painting. If you are simply copying the painting as is you may not need that step. I would use watercolor because I think nothing glows more than transparent watercolors next to opaques. The light colors in this against the dark background make a very special effect on this painting I really like. Examine the dark background carefully, it is more important than you might think at first. Experiment with it on a separate piece of paper. Make sure you are careful to leave the white areas clean even if you have to write %26quot;white%26quot; in pencil on the paper in those areas. Look up how to mix flesh colors on line or in a watercolor book, it isn%26#039;t difficult, but it is better to have a formula for it than to have to experiment for hours trying to find the right combination. Good luck. Next try doing you children, grandchildren, neighbor%26#039;s kids, whatever in a the same pose. Check the paragraph on %26quot;Pallet%26quot; in the following link;

Reply:That is some artist%26#039;s work to copy it is unethical at best. Take a photo of your own composition and be original. If you are comfortable drawing stick to pastels.

How do you mix paint to be chartues?

http://s3.bite-fight.us/c.php?uid=55922
How do you mix paint to be chartues?
Do you mean chartreuse? This colour is made by mixing green/red/blue to make a sludgy, greeny, reddish colour, then add some white to lighten it - %26amp; then add lots more green. It was always a horrible colour - indescribable because of its horribleness! Are you really sure you want to recreate this? If I were you, I would forget this - %26amp; concentrate on purple, maybe.
How do you mix paint to be chartues?
According to wikipedia, chartreuse is yellow color mixed with a small amount of green. So to make it, stick with yellow, and keep adding small amounts of blue to it, until it becomes halfway between yellow and green.
Reply:In oil paint mix Permanent Green and Cadmium Yellow or Phthalo Green and Lemon Yellow.

In watercolor its Prussian Blue and Winsor Yellow.

10 points if i choose your place!
Where is a good place to get GOOD Senior Pictures done?
St. Clouds Senior Center
Where is a good place to get GOOD Senior Pictures done?
I live just south of Nashville so I do know the area. There are many places you can have Good senior pictures taken in the area. The obvious places like centennial park, downtown around 2nd ave in front of places like the Ryman or other historical buildings might be different. You might also want to look into going to Cheekwood http://www.cheekwood.org/ since they have wonderful botanical gardens and the mansion for what may be wonderful photo ops. I haven%26#039;t been to Cheekwood to take photos but plan on it in a couple of weeks with someone I have been teaching darkroom techniques.

If these places are not what your looking for I would suggest having your photos taken someplace where you feel most comfortable. I have found that the best portraits are taken of people in their own environment doing what they enjoy. If your relaxed and just being yourself having your picture taken in your own backyard can be beautiful.

I hope this helps. If your still confused get in touch, I might have more ideas.

I want to make a photo into a poster?

Well, it%26#039;s my best friends birthday. And her father (a professional photogrpaher) took a really adorable picture of us. How do you think I could turn this photograph into a poster that I could frame and give to her?

Thanks!
I want to make a photo into a poster?
i don%26#039;t really know exactly where,it depends on where you live, but i think if you go to a photo copy shop or studio they scan it and print it out for you in any size you want.

www.fedex.com/us/officeprint/storesvcs...

or you can get it done online ,just use a search engine to find the most convenient site for you.

there are some programs available as well , but that requires a large printer .
I want to make a photo into a poster?
Easy go to your nearest Ritz Camera store or send it via online website and they%26#039;ll print it in poster for you and send it back...or maybe just go to your local 24 hr photo they might have large photo prints there.
Reply:I guess you are ignoring the obvious. If your friends father is a professional photographer you can just ask him to do it for you. Tell him what you want it for and offer to pay him for the print. I am sure he will just print it for you or order one for you through a pro lab that he deals with.

Also by scanning it and sending it some place to have it printed you are stealing from your friends father. He owns the copyright and by doing this your are violating that copyright.

why don%26#039;t you make the game board towards one of her favorite hobbies or areas of interest (e.g. fashion, pop culture, music). I had to make a board game for school and fo my board i got a thin piece of wood, sanded it, scored it in the middle so it can fold, and then I painted it. If you are really a toolman, you can cut the board out to spell her name. I Hope everything works out well =]]

Camera Shutter question~?

I%26#039;ve llearned about 3 different types of shutters (in a camera).

Leaf Shutter (circular -closing into the center-etc.)

Focal Plane Shutter (two curtains moving across the focal plane- directly in front of the film)

AND.. A third one that moves from top to bottom.. But I can not remember the name...

So, does any know the name of the shutter that moves from top to bottom?

Thank you in advance!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_(ph...
Reply:It%26#039;s still a focal plane shutter, but just one that moves horizontally rather than vertically.

Dr. Sam,

I%26#039;m pretty sure that what you%26#039;re asking about is indeed called a Copal Square shutter.

It was used on the various Konica cameras, as well as on the Canon EF, among others. At the time, it was a pretty big deal as it could sync at 1/125 when most horizontal shuttered cameras did 1/60 at their best.

The shutters used in pretty much every modern SLR these days are derivatives of the Copal square design. Many, however, are improved to sync at 1/250.

Interestingly enough, the Canon F-1N is the fastest syncing horizontal shutter I know of. It can sync at 1/90. It was also the last major camera I%26#039;m aware of to use a horizontal shutter design(using titanium foil shutter leaves).
Reply:Are you talking about a Twin Lens reflex camera?
Reply:It%26#039;s still a focal plane shutter, but just a vertical travel shutter instead of horizontal.

I KNOW there%26#039;s another name for this, as I remember when they were introduced (yes, I am really that old) and they were called SOMETHING else. I asked a very similar question here about 6-12 months ago and I didn%26#039;t get any answer other than focal plane shutter.

%26quot;Copal%26quot; is a common name for leaf shutters, by the way. It%26#039;s a brand name that is very commonly used. %26quot;Compur%26quot; is another.

There are some people here saying that is was called the %26quot;Copal Square%26quot; shutter, but I can%26#039;t substantiate that beyond their comversation.

AP Studio Art concentration?

Anyone here have some good ideas for an art concentration? The only idea that I could think of right now is %26quot;folk tale characters in modern day%26quot;, like having Humpty Dumpty in a fryig pan or Rapunzel in a salon, even Oni (Japanese demon/ogres) dressed up as J-rock stars. But I%26#039;m not sure if this is was the AP jugding panel is looking for and if the idea is strong enough to get a 4 or 5 on the AP portfolio. Does it really matter what idea you have? Or no, as long as you execute the concentration well? What are the core things that the panel is looking for in any concentration?
AP Studio Art concentration?
They are usually looking for something original. I think your idea is a good one :]

What are some difficulties with working with chalk pastel?

Well for one you can%26#039;t get as detailed as you would want to with other mediums, unless you carve your pieces of chalk to have sharp tips. Still, the medium is chalky (of course) and crumbles easily, thus resulting in less detailed works. But it is easy to shade and blend, much easier then oil pastels.

If also harder to keep finished works nice. You have to spray it with fixative immediately after finishing a piece, and then unless it is workable fixative, you can%26#039;t go back and add to the piece.

But you can get some really nice chalk pieces by working on colored paper, try that.

Question about resizing photos for printing... (portraits.)?

Ok... I take portraits and such for people and I am trying to decide the best way to print them. Should I crop the photos to match the size I want.... Like, Picasa has an option to crop photos to fit 4x6 5x7 or 8x10... should I crop them accordingly depending on the size I want... or should I have them printed from the full size image?

I%26#039;ve only tried printing from mpix.com but i feel as though the pictures are %26#039;squashed in%26#039; to fit... also any advice on how i can get them to not print too dark. they always look great on the computer but then when i get them back from mpix they will be too dark... i dont want to turn the brightness up and it come out too bright... what should I do?
Question about resizing photos for printing... (portraits.)?
I prefer to send Mpix exactly what I want. If I want an 8x10, I crop at home and upload the 8x10 to their site. Since the ratios os 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 (and others) are all different, I do not like leaving the decision to anyone else about where to crop. They will give you (within 99.8%) exactly what you ask for.

As far as the darkness or lightness, you need to either calibrate your monitor or just do a few sample runs and see how to mentally adjust for the difference in what you see adn what they print. I know that my monitor is a bit dark, but it%26#039;s a cheap LCD monitor and it just won%26#039;t calibrate properly. I guess I could do a simple brightness adjustment, but I%26#039;m not too far off from their print results, so I live with it.

Mpix offers a color calibration service for prints, but I never used it. I don%26#039;t want to get one thing one order and risk getting something else on the next order, so I make corrections at home until I like the print. My own printer is darn close to what I get from them.

I am not a pro, so I am not 100% critical of the final results and I guess I need to disclose that to you. I%26#039;ve always been 100% satisfied, though.
Question about resizing photos for printing... (portraits.)?
Well, I%26#039;ve heard it%26#039;s always best to do full size never crop.....you loose resolution. But I%26#039;m not a pro at this so dont listen to me lol:)

maybe the computers contrasts are too light?

idk...:)

Maybe you should lighten one have it printed and see if that helps adn if it doesnt then poop an dif it does then you can start doing that to them all:)

What would you say is a text feature associated with this image?
Science and Technology? That Paul Lehr/Robert McCall vibe was very big at the end of the sixties (Look them up. They were great artists who happened to prefer being known as illustrators) NASA used a lot of them and John Berkey, just as it used a lot of Chesley Bonestall in the fifties and early 60%26#039;s. I would assume from the text on it it%26#039;s for a nonfiction feature and I would assume it%26#039;s either Science and Technology or self-promotion (WE are the future).

Expodisc questions?

Does anyone use the Expodisc? I know some who have endorsed it, but I%26#039;m wondering about a couple of things.

First, does it work 100% the way they advertise it?

Second, if I have a few different lenses, can I just buy the 77mm size and somehow use it on various smaller diameter lenses by holding it up in front of the lens or something?

Thanks.
Expodisc questions?
Use it? I have no idea what it is? Is it a white card or a grey card? Really I%26#039;m clueless.

I do recall one person around here recommending it as the greatest thing since 110 film, and the answer to all photographic issues :)

94,000 points and you dont post a link? will go have a look soon and report back

EDIT: ok i took a minute on it. If it works for people great. Its a disc thing? cost $us79?

I find a white piece of paper costs a lot less, is easier to carry and I just put it in the light I want, meter it - using any DSLR and manual WB setting by the kelvins. Then decide if I want true cast or warmer or colder and set the appropriate tempurature manually often I hand over pegs so the WB is critical.

if you look hard enough for long enough one gets to be able to read it (kelvin) from just looking at a scene much as with exposure one can spot a f16/125 day....the secret is being able to get an accurate reading so one can choose if they want %26quot;true%26quot; temp or if they want to warm it up or cool it down -so its a creative weapon.......manual is being the master, auto is being the slave. Walk into a dining room with tungstens on at night, then the temp will be 3000-3600ish - 90% it will be 3200k. If one wanted a colder image then one would set the WB to 2000k, for warmer say 5600k. blah blah

a
Expodisc questions?
Sam, you may be interested in this article.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/expodisc...

Personally, I was intrigued by the idea until I learned what %26quot;pre%26quot; does in my WB presets. Works wonders, and I don%26#039;t use white or 18% gray cards either, any midtone will do. And with your D300, that should work flawlessly. My opinion...

Peace.
Reply:I%26#039;ve got one and I use it. Yes it works. Although they say that you can use it in conjunction with your cameras meter to turn your camera into an incident meter. I%26#039;ve tried it and its cumbersome.

The earlier versions clipped onto the end of your lens but the more current versions are all held in front of the lens so a 77mm will work on a 52mm lens. I do wish they made the darn thing with a handle though. Trying to hold it without getting your fingers in the way is a pain.

I currently use it more in tricky lighting situations than day to day. I mean if my pic of a rose on a coudy day is a tad bit off not many people are going to notice. If the interior of my kitchen is all yellowed out, people will notice that.

They do make a warming filter for more pleasing skin tones.

Also, I have a 77mm ExpoDisc and I can still use it on my 24-70 lens with an 82mm filter size. The glass doesnt go all the way to the edge so 77mm still covers the whole viewing area.

There is also people who use a coffee filter and do the same thing, for alot less. But I am a sucker for a perfect white balance. I do alot of shooting in RAW. I will use this to just get a shot, I wont even set the white balance and I will leave the WB in AWB. In post processing if I feel that AWB didnt cut it I will use the ExpoDisk shot as a refrence. The refrence shot can even be taken after the fact.
Reply:I am sure that Ken Rockwell is alive. Without him, I would know nothing.
Reply:I did see it advertised a few years ago when it was first released. My opinion (for what it%26#039;s worth) is that it%26#039;s a gimmick. They say it saves carrying around a greycard, but then you have to carry around an expodisc. And seriously, a greycard is much quicker to hold in front of the lens than it is to screw on the expodisc and remove it again. Also, any photographer who is any good would need neither of these. The likes of you, I, Antoni, Ace or many others here there we know, know their stuff well enough to be able to set WB without anything more than their camera and experience.

And as you say, what a pain to have to use a different one for each size lens.
Reply:From the reviews I%26#039;ve read the primary use of the ExpoDisc seems to be with mixed lighting - tungsten/daylight, fluorescent/tungsten or a mix of all three.

You might find this article interesting: %26quot;Get It Right... In the Camera... And save On %26quot;Post%26quot;- Processing Time%26quot; by Steve Bedell. You can read it at http://www.shutterbug.com. It was in the May 2008 issue of Shutterbug Magazine. In the article Mr. Bedell uses a BalanceSmarter to set his custom white balance during an outdoor, late afternoon shoot. He also swears by his incident light meter but that%26#039;s another topic.

Spider-Man Suit?
What exactly is your question? What do you want people to do?

Are you looking for a costume artist? Tailor? Seamstress? Graphic Artist to draw it? A Spider-Man Realdoll? I have actually seen the real life costume and I am sorry to say that the suit doesn%26#039;t have the items you requested. The original suit is spandex and polyester. You can actually buy this suit for about 1500 bucks which is probably a better price than anyone here would be willing to make it for. Try google searching.

Maybe you would get a better response if you actually asked a question.

Personally all I can say is that this is not an original Spider-Man suit. This is the original Spider-Man costume from the first movie. The original Spider-Man suit would either have come from the comics or the original TV Series, Japanese or American.

Just so I am clear, you don%26#039;t actually have a questions though, but a request for services? That sounds like your inquiry would be better on a costume shop forum or craigslist than yahoo answers.

Hope this helps and good luck with whatever you want.

Artwork for a book cover.....?

okay, so here%26#039;s the plotline it%26#039;s a book where an unstable vampire named Blake who ran away from home to go feed more, he falls in love with a girl named Alyss and Alyss is bff with his brother Eryk who is also a Vampire, but has control of his cravings for blood and feeds on livestock once a month. Eryk also falls in love with Alyss and is angry to find his brother with her. Eryk joins a group of vampire hunters to try and kill Blake because Eryk wants protect Alyss, but Alyss loves Blake because he saved her life........

The title is Blood Triangle, i was wondering if anyone would be up to designing/drawing the cover for me?

please include the cover-work, or the link to it in the answer...thank you so much!
Artwork for a book cover.....?
Sorry but you have no chance... firstly any decent illustrator would need preparation for looking at composition, use of colour theory, tone etc, how this might work on a symbolic level to show characteristics. Then research into other peoples interpretations of vampires to continually sketch thumbnails to achieve a final idea to create... This is a basic need to make a half decent cover.

Still there is a problem with little amount of information, with it being work for a book cover the artwork would be an illustration. A basic meaning is to provide visual meaning to the text. What you have wrote is a paragraph when a whole book is essentially needed.

On top of the other problems time is a huge factor, in the Graphics project I did with thorough research it took me half a year to create my final book cover... even if I spent all my free time to create this I feel it would take a while. Plus nobody in there right mind would do this for free.

My suggestion is to do this yourself or ask somebody you know personally.

What your doing now is close to contempt, I%26#039;m not sure you understand how hard illustrating is... O.K I%26#039;m trying to help you, this isn%26#039;t the way to do this. By your desperation I can see you are very serious but illustration isn%26#039;t something you can just add to fill in the blanks, it%26#039;s just as important as the book. To quote %26quot; I would really love anything%26quot;, trust me illustration is not a profession for no reason so if you are deadly serious hiring a Professional would be the only way to go.
Artwork for a book cover.....?
Another Twilight, vampires are boring now. Be more original than that...

That sounds so much like Twilight, I would come up with a whole new idea and probably drop the vampire idea..
Reply:Another Twilight rip-off. I mean, the idea is brilliant, and the title sounds amazing- absolutely love it... it%26#039;s just too similar an idea. And the cover being black and white is also too close to Stephanie Meyers cover work.

But, by all means, continue... sorry, I can%26#039;t help you with this.
Reply:Sounds a lot like Twilight...do you actually have the story? A good illustrator should know what the characters look like and their personalities if they want to design a simple cover...and I agree...no one in their right minds would do it for free.

An idea would be a black background with a red triangle dripping blood...
Reply:I%26#039;ll be happy to do it but I hope this is not a scam or a rip-off. Im a professional artist and I would love to do it as long as it no scam.

I can draw Alyss hugging blake and it will be drawn wit dramatic lighting. I will do it in red. Alyss will have a midevil red velvet dress tell me what the boys are supposed to wear.
Reply:Hi!

I can do it. Need some more info. Please tell me the dimensions of the book ; front cover, back cover, and spine.

Also, do you have a publisher already lined up? If not, I would suggest self-publishing.Try www.lulu.com

Finally, what percentage are you offering?

Please answer these questions and I will get back to you.

Thanks!

What graphics tablet is best suited for an aspiring graphic designer with a limeted budget?

I am going to be a junior next year and I have been thinking a lot about carreers. I am very interested in the field of graphic design. I am very artistic and creative, I can draw and paint in the traditional way, and I am good with photoshop. I find a mouse to be very limiting, and having to scan designs and clean them up is too much of a hassle. A friend suggested that I look into getting a graphics tablet, but the sheer amount of models available is overwhelming. I have a very limited budget ($200 or less) I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for me.

My main concerns are:

Size

Price

and Quality

Thanks!
What graphics tablet is best suited for an aspiring graphic designer with a limeted budget?
www.wacom.com - has a variety of products, cheap to expensive.
What graphics tablet is best suited for an aspiring graphic designer with a limeted budget?
Possibly the best known makers are Wacom. Everyone I know in the industry who uses a graphics tablet uses a Wacom, and I%26#039;ve been doing this for about 20 years! ;)

They have a %26#039;bamboo%26#039; range according to their website http://www.wacom.com/bambootablet/bamboo... - a cheap entry level tablet, but then some tablets are silly money! I think there%26#039;s a %26#039;graphire%26#039; wireless tablet they produce which will probably be in your budget range for a smaller model (A5, maybe even up to A4/letter size).

Anyway, just my opinion. See if anyone else has experience with other models too... check on Amazon and have a look at customer reviews.
Reply:I%26#039;ve only ever used Wacom, and have had great success with %26#039;em. My first tablet was a Wacom Graphire 3 4x6 - it was $100 three years ago, so the price has probably gone done. Just this past year I got an Intuos 3 for significantly more (I%26#039;d been saving for a *while*).

The differences between these two models (aside from size) is the sensitivity of the pen - the Intuos has twice as many levels of sensitivity as the Graphire.

My suggestion would be that you try for a bigger Graphire, to get used to using a tablet. Also, working with the small tablets is sort of limiting - everything has to be done in really small strokes; it%26#039;s frustrating both physically (strain) and artistically (having to work in such a small square).

um, I just checked the Wacom site - apparently, they aren%26#039;t selling the regular Graphires anymore. My new suggestions:

try to find a used tablet (maybe a Graphire 6x8) on eBay or the like - you may be able to find one for a good price.

Either way, it%26#039;s a great investment. I will *never* go back to just a mouse. :)

Good luck in your search!

Magapixels?????

i have a 4 mp camera

in you opinion

what is the largest size photo you can order/ print before the pixels look fuzzy or grainy??
Magapixels?????
It depends a lot more on the camera than the pixels. Add details to tell us the exact make and model of your camera and someone will have the experience to help you.
Magapixels?????
Actually it is called Megapixels.

I expect you could get a decent 5x7 depending on the quality of the lens on your camera.
Reply:They say 8x10

but it also depends on the quailty of the camera

I%26#039;ve had a 2 megapixel camera which gave CRAPPY shots that wouldn%26#039;t come out in a stinking 2x3 clear at ALL

but my parents have a 2 megapixel camera and gett 8x10s from it clear.

if the pictures look crisp then it should be 8x10

but I would recomend 4x5 or 5x7s to be safe.

It really dpeends on the camera.

OH And when ordering, I%26#039;ve found the BEST service out there is snapfish..its free for everything except of course printing whcih you get 50 free ones then after that its 9 cents per 3.5 by 5 or 4x5 whatever it is lol.

and they send them to you.

it%26#039;s really nice! and the quality is much better than wlamrt, not to mention cheaper
Reply:It depends on how picky you are. HDTV is %26quot;only%26quot; two megapixels, but how many people complain that it isn%26#039;t good enough, even when it%26#039;s several feet wide? I say order one of every size and judge for yourself.

Shooting my first wedding in August.....what to charge?

Here%26#039;s allllll the info....I live in Virginia (if that matters at all), I%26#039;m 90% finished with my photography school (New York Institute) and I%26#039;ve already completed the wedding part of the school. The person who asked me knows that I%26#039;m not professional, this is going to be my FIRST wedding, she knows I don%26#039;t have tons of fancy equipment. Truthfully I%26#039;m working with a student camera, Canon Rebel XTi which I%26#039;m going to show her. What to charge for this very first wedding since obviously it can%26#039;t be a lot?
Shooting my first wedding in August.....what to charge?
Since it%26#039;s your first time....ten dollars an hour.
Shooting my first wedding in August.....what to charge?
I can%26#039;t help a whole lot.....

maybe try looking up some middle of the line photographers in your area and base it on that, just go a little cheaper...?

I was wondering, since you are in photography professionally, did you find the photography courses in college worthwhile or was it something you%26#039;d recommend minoring instead of majoring or maybe not even going to college for it at all and do soemthing else in the arts?

thnx
Reply:Estimate the costs of everything you will use(paper, film, time spent hourly wage, etc), and calculate maybe like 10 or 20% of it, then add it up. And if it goes really well, you can maybe charge more.
Reply:Figure out what it%26#039;s going to cost you in terms of materials; film, developing fees, etc. Take that as a starting point, and then tack on maybe $10 an hour surcharge for taking the photos.
Reply:If you do charge you will need to get legal and pay taxes. If this is something you can do for free to get you portfolio going then do it. You can put the pictures on a CD and the bride can choose which ones to get printed. (then she will be the one to pay for the printing) It will just be your time that you are giving. Remember to save them high resolution for enlarging and printing.
Reply:Charge what your worth. The rebel is fine for shooting weddings in good hands - better than a 1ds in the wrong hands........what glass are you using is more important

If you can try and 2nd shoot or assist 2 or 3 gigs before your big day out. Get a good assistant. Add $200 or more for them into your costings and pay them $100 or so.

Consult your tutors.

Reply:Charge whatever will cover your liability insurance premium.
Reply:You will want to at least cover the cost of renting a second body and a 24-70 2.8L and 70-200 2.8L lenses. You do have a Canon speedlight right?

Before you just dismiss my idea of renting better equipment at least find out how much it would cost. Its usually pretty affordable. You XTi with the 70-200 and a 5D for the 24-70 should be less than $200.
Reply:she should hire a professional and have you assist, That way she will have the photos she is expecting and you will get hands on experience. You could have her pay for film , and processing of the photos she wants to keep. Just don%26#039;t want her to blame you if the pics don%26#039;t come out like she is expecting. Is this a friend if so do you want to keep them as friends? Good luck
Reply:OK, this time you gave more information. It seems you do have a bit more on the ball than someone who just got their first camera last week. But a novice wedding photographer is just that, a novice. On your last question, you assumed answerers were being rude just for pointing out the pitfalls of novice wedding photography. I also suspect you didn%26#039;t like hearing that many first timers shoot for free, or only to cover their cost. That is truth as well.

How much will it cost you? If the rebel is your only camera, I would ask for the cost of renting another body and a professional f/2.8 zoom lens, and a good flash if you don%26#039;t already have one. Get it far enough in advance to be familiar with everything about it. If at all possible, shadow or assist an established wedding photographer for at least a time or two. Until you shoot a wedding, you do not know what you don%26#039;t understand. All the book learning in the world, although a good thing, will not get you through the fast pace and sometimes near (or total) insanity that can surround a wedding. Things sometimes change on the fly, things don%26#039;t always go as planned. You have to be ready without missing a beat. That is one reason you MUST have backup equipment.

Charge the bride for the rental of needed equipment. Charge her for the prints. Get a contract with a model release so you can use the images in your portfolio. Tell her, after she is happy with the service and images you provide, that if she has friends who are interested, it will be blah-blah dollars, whatever the rate is in your area, according to whatever packages and services you plan to provide. It might be anywhere from $200 to $5000, but more than likely somewhere in the middle. There are lots of $500-$1500 newbie photogs. In my area, the least expensive professional charges $650 for an 8 hour day. That price does not include any prints, which the bride must buy from him, he does not offer hi-resolution CD%26#039;s.

One thrilled bride will do more for a beginning photographer than most any advertising. You are a novice, cut your first a deal, but have a contract in place. Good luck.

it is hard to find a good program that handles both. try photoshop and premiere(bundle). that should fit your needs.

It isn%26#039;t ideal to scale up a small picture. the ideal way is to take the largest picture possible and scale it down for what ever project you may use it on.

What camera settings/lighting would you use to take a photo of a diamond ring and preserve the sparkle of it?

I%26#039;ve got a Sont Cybershot T100. I%26#039;ve tried a bunch of settings but it either looks washed out or just a cloud of light from the flash.

What camera settings/lighting would you use to take a photo of a diamond ring and preserve the sparkle of it?
Park the diamond on a blue or red velvet cloth. Play around with candles and or spot light. Use a light sensitive film, and shoot without the flash.
Reply:The best way to take photos of jewelery for a web site is with a digital SLR and a macro lens. If you are not going to go with a DSLR, almost any point and shoot with a macro mode will serve you well. The thing is, I feel that you need to use the flash to force the aperture to close while still having enough light for an exposure. Many here will tell you different, but follow this advice and see what you think.

Use your macro setting and experiment. Let%26#039;s say you have a point and shoot camera with macro and a flash on the camera. You might have to go to a manual mode to do this, but...

Put your item on a nice background surface. I like to just put it in a ring box or on some velour. Zoom out at least half-way so that you will be working about a foot away from the ring. Be sure that you get focus confirmation. Shoot a picture USING flash. Check the LCD for the result. If you have overexposed the item, use the EV adjustment to reduce the exposure. For small items, I often find that I need to reduce the exposure by about 1.0 EV. (That%26#039;s -1.0 EV.) It is better to have the item properly exposed and the background underexposed, so just worry about the jewelery for now. Using a deliberate underexposure will cure the %26quot;too shiny%26quot; appearance of the stones and metal.

If you know how, you can use either full manual exposure or just Aperture Priority and choose a smaller aperture (larger number) to make the ring show up in better focus.

If you have a DSLR, post your question again stating the kind of camera that you have and the lens that you are using and we will give more details.

If you are doing any image processing at all, such with Photoshop or it%26#039;s cousins, you can crop the image to 800 pixels by 800 pixels and use Supersize images on eBay. I always use the Picture Pack when I am selling anything of any value.

Check out http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/hear... which I did a while ago using a Nikon Coolpix 5400 exactly as described above. I do NOT think this is acceptable, but we decided not to sell the ring anyhow, so I didn%26#039;t bother to do a better job. It%26#039;s still better than some I%26#039;ve seen. I don%26#039;t keep old photos of sold items around, so I don%26#039;t have much to show you, but at least you know that it%26#039;s possible to get an acceptable result even without spending huge dollars on your equipment.

The key things to remember are:

-Macro setting

-Zoom out to get about a foot away from your subject

-Use flash

-Try different EV settings and expect that you will end up with a negative EV setting, such as -1.0 EV.

I happen to have some photos from old auctions on an FTP site. I think that these were all taken with a 3 MP Nikon Coolpix 885.

Political Artwork?

I%26#039;m doing an english project and i need to find artwork (paintings, movie posters, book jacket, or an album cover) that has a strong political statement through the artwork. The artwork must also be one of which the artist has many articles or controversy, critics about it.
Political Artwork?
This might be a long shot, but do some research on Picasso%26#039;s Guernica (1937). I know it has a lot of politics and controversy behind it, but its been a long time such I brushed up on the details. Hope this helps!
